Dr. Byock Presentation: Providing “The Best Care Possible” Through the End of Life
Dr. Ira Byock is a noted author, advocate and pioneering clinician and the Director of Palliative Medicine at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire and a Professor at Dartmouth Medical School. In this interactive session, Dr. Byock will explore the elements that must be in place within and beyond health care and the stakeholders who must be in communication to provide care that is consistent with best practice standards and with the personal preferences of patients and families.
PANEL DISCUSSION:
Joan Dacher, PhD, MS, RN, Director of the Doctor of Nursing Science Program at Sage Colleges, will facilitate an expert panel discussion
“Thinking Outside the Policy Box: Strategies for Transforming Health Care and Society.”
Esteemed panelists will include the following representatives:
- Beth Popp, MD, Director of Palliative Medicine at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn
- Timothy W. Kirk, PhD, Assistant Professor of Philosophy, City University of New York
- Kevin Mathews, MD, FAAFP, Medical Director of the Palliative Care Service at Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare in Utica, NY
Listening Session
Following the panel discussion there will be a listening session with audience interaction that asks “What’s Happening in Your Community?”
OBJECTIVES: At the conclusion of this session participants will understand:
- Two fundamental components of quality of clinical care: a) concordance with accepted professional standards of practice, and b) concordance with patient (and family) values and preferences
- That competent comprehensive health care is essential, but by itself, insufficient to provide optimal care through the end of life. (They will understand that excellent, comprehensive medical care is part of an integrated, comprehensive community response to illness, dying, caregiving and grief)
- The role of individuals and families as engaged and effective partners in the shared goal of achieving optimal care
- The critical role of families in meeting the day-to-day needs of patients and the coming challenges to family caregiving and the role of family advocacy in insuring access to services and quality of care for seriously ill and dying people
WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Administrators, Strategic Planners, Hospital and Hospice Medical Directors and Clinicians; Healthcare providers from across the continuum (hospitals, hospices, nursing homes, home health, assisted and residential living programs); Hospice and Palliative Care interdisciplinary team members: Physicians, Nurses and Nurse Practitioners, Social Workers, Chaplains and alternative therapy providers.
