What is Palliative Care?
Palliative care is both a philosophy of care and an organized system of medical care provided by an interdisciplinary team, including Physicians, Nurses and Nurse Practitioners, Social Workers, Chaplains, Counselors and Alternative Therapists. Palliative care is focused on the relief of suffering and support for the best possible quality of life for patients facing serious life-threatening illness, and their families. Palliative care seeks to address not only physical pain, but also emotional, social and spiritual pain to achieve the best possible quality of life for patients and their families.
The goal of palliative care is to relieve suffering and provide the best possible quality of life for people facing the pain, symptoms and stresses of serious illness. Palliative care extends the principles of hospice care to a broader population that could benefit from receiving this type of care earlier in their illness or disease process. It is appropriate at any age and at any stage of an illness, and it can be provided along with treatments that are meant to cure.
